We plan to celebrate with mini housewarming parties all year long!

However, in true Bloomin’ & Prunin’ Fashion, I am sorry to burst your bubble…but

THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT A HOUSE

Yes, the benefits of homeownership far exceed the benefits of renting – and yes, that is something to celebrate. However, I am still most amazed at the process of my housing journey.

It began in the summer of 2001 as I moved into the Quad; the largest freshman dorm at Howard University. There were about 14 rooms total on the third floor with two girls per room. My roommates name was Jeannette. We had no air conditioning or TVs in our rooms. We did each other’s hair in the hallways and had to share one phone per room (as it was still more convenient to use landlines at that time than cell phones). There were about three fully-functioning shower stalls at the end of the hall that we had to take turns using. We had the time of our lives. We were bright-eyed and unstoppable! I prayed and knew that God was with me.

Fast-forward. After I dropped out of school at Howard and then finally returned back to DC, I ended up in an apartment that was heavily infested with mice and bugs. I remember living there for almost a year, crying many nights. I would leave the television on at night so that I could see what was happening around me. I was afraid to come out from underneath my covers and used the light to make sure that I did not step on rodents that scurried around through the night. Even then, with tears running down my face, I prayed and knew that God was with me.

I finally left that location and decided to get another roommate, even though I had a deep need to be independent. He was a chain smoker, there was no A/C, but, I was safe – and most importantly – there were NO bugs. #thankyoujesus. I had very little money, no car or belongings and remember sleeping on a green cot in the center of my bare bedroom (a converted living room) with tears coming down my face, but this time with a smile. I prayed and knew that God was with me.

Now, 15 years later, as I pull into our brand new garage, and it closes behind me. As I walk into this beautiful home that my husband and I both designed and had built from the ground – I smile and cry, not because of the increase in value and comfort – but because, He is still with me. I pray that His peace remains.

How has God been faithful in your life? Pray & look for ways this week to invite His peace wherever you are.
